Maestro
The novel Maestro addresses many key issues that people today are faced with or have to live through. Many of the issues addressed are in relation to growing up or can be connected to immature behavior. It is also a book about how relationships can be made or they can found in people you least expect it to be. However the main point addressed can be summarized down to self centeredness and this is shown through arrogance in its most pure forms. It is this pure arrogance that is chiefly to blame for what happens to both Paul and Keller in the novel. In the beginning, we the audience are shown that already Paul has very little respect towards Keller. Before Paul had even the chance to speak to Keller, he is already judging him by his appearance; "...a boozer's incandescent glow. The pitted, sun-coursed skin a cheap ruined leather..." this shows a great deal of arrogance on Paul's behalf has he is arrogant to the fact that despite Keller's look he is a supreme musician. Paul's attitude towards Keller changes however towards to the end of Darwin 1967 and he starts to gain a little bit of respect for him but as Paul is commonly known to act he tries to impress Keller in order to gain some respect for
It takes the life from his family and ultimately leads him to cut of his own finger. This is what happens to both Paul and Keller in the novel, they are blinded by there own arrogance and at some points they blind each other by being so arrogant. Keller is a great musician and no one will take that away from him but it is music that gets him into a lot of trouble in his life. Rather we see a bunch of locals to arrogant, chauvinistic and drunk to realize what they are doing, and to most people's disgust Keller is one of them. Henisch at one stage stated that 'He had played for Hitler. himself and Paul quotes, 'I redoubled my efforts to defy the theory of limits and approach ever more closely-and finally grasp-the ideal I was sure he felt me incapable of reaching. Keller views music as an inner beauty that some posses and others not and this is true as most people only view beauty in a physical manner and this is rather arrogant of them. Keller is arrogant but shows it in many different ways to Paul it is all kept bottled up inside and sometimes he lets it out, one of these times is when he blames himself for his families death when in actual fact they were all victims of the holocaust. As for Keller who on the surface seems to be a drunken slob who seeks refuge on the balcony of a pub he has an inner beauty that Paul's arrogance stops him from seeing. The true beauty of Keller can come from the idea of the Swan which contradicts the idea of beauty offered in this novel. but a concert pianist is one in a million' Keller said this to Paul towards the end of the novel and this sent Paul's head into a spin as it was this that hit home hard for him has he finally realized that he is not the best. When we think of the Swan, we think of elegance, beauty, peace and dignity however, when we look into the Swan, we see none of these features. Paul's arrogance surfaces many times throughout the novel but none more than when he plays his music.
