             a. The fact that many individuals who are called upon for service during wars feel isolated, lonely and deserted while doing things that their country has called upon them to do. Orwell shows this in Winston as he feels a sense of guilt and isolation about working for the ruling Party.
             b. Often in boarding schools, the students are controlled with a sense of helplessness under the rule of the absolute power of the schoolmaster. Orwell transfers these feelings to Winston who finds himself trapped in a totalitarian government.
             c. In Nazi Germany, the leaders would make up stories to take the blame away from them and place it on others. Often in 1984 the Party would make up stories about achievements and others feats.
             d. During our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, our government uses Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden as the "scapegoats" (however in this case they really are at blame); In 1984 The Party uses Goldstein as the scapegoat.
             e. Kesey has an opinion that the power of a ruler or government can be transferred to a more charismatic and respected leader. This has happened often throughout history as there have been many revolutions and rebellions.
             f. Every since societies and civilizations have emerged, there have been classes of people. This is related to 1984 with the classes they have. The Inner Party is the highest, then the Outer Party and finally the proles.
             g. In Soviet Russia, during the cold war, military was a huge part of society. Almost everybody was in the military whether or not they actually trained. In 1984 the military is also one of the central part of their culture.
             h. During and before WWII Hitler and the Nazi party would tell lies about improved quality of life to keep the citizens spirits high. This is exactly what was done in 1984. Throughout the day on the Telescreens "news" of achievements and food ration raises were announced to keep the populous satisfied.
