Most importantly, people need to be taught to be tolerant of other people's physical appearance, so that they do not drive them into the illness. In the United States, researches estimate that five to ten percent of all young women have a distorted image of their own body, and have a fixation on obtaining a thinner physique. The illness has been reported most commonly among white young women of higher socioeconomic standing, and people involved in activities where thinness is favorable such as dancing, theater, and distance running. It is an attempt to use food and weight to deal with emotional issues. While ninety percent of all cases reported are of females, experts estimate that a large number of male cases go unreported.
