Lit Analysis of Scarlet Letter

             "Love, whether newly born, or aroused from a deathlike slumber, must always create a sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance that it overflows upon the outward world" (Hawthorne 193). More than a tale of sin, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is also an intense love story. His mastery of romance is beautifully exhibited through this work. He also seems to be rather fond of using religious and natural images to symbolize different views. Through the abundance of unique symbols, Hawthorne unifies the novel and creatively adds a deeper level of meaning to the story. "Hawthorne was an American novelist and short-story writer who was a master of the allegorical and symbolic tale" (Encyclopedia Britannica 2003). An understanding of the symbolic level of meaning found throughout the pages is essential for a thorough comprehension of the book as a whole. Many of his symbols are full of ambiguity; he leaves it up to the reader to come up with her own conclusion. Hawthorne's powerful language of imagery enriches The Scarlet Letter through its vivid portrayal of symbols to creatively exhibit his themes and characters.
             The scarlet letter "A" is the most prominent material symbol that Hawthorne scrupulously expresses throughout every chapter of his novel. As the novel progresses, so does the level of meaning and the importance of the scarlet letter. "His use of symbolism in The Scarlet Letter is particularly effective, and the scarlet letter itself takes on a wider significance and application that is out of all proportion to its literal character as a scrap of cloth" (Encyclopedia Britannica 2003). The letter itself openly symbolizes Hester's adultery and, during the first few years of her punishment, is a daily reminder of her shame and unjust humiliation.
