             Satire is a literary technique of writing, which ridicules individuals, organizations or states. Its chief purpose is to provoke or prevent change in the viewers' minds. Generally, the satirist targets a small idea, which they are dissatisfied about, and intends to encourage improvement, targeting pretense falsity, absurdity and arrogance. When the viewer or reader observes this satire, they are sometimes behoved to change or alter their ways, which is exactly the satirist's chief purpose. The four texts, A Modest Proposal, Animal Farm, Yes Prime Minister, and Kath and Kim are each of a different text type, present the satirists views of the world and raise consequential issues which they believe should be altered.
             Satire works through the use of over-exaggeration and this can be observed through "A MODEST PROPOSAL" by Jonathan Swift. Swift uses legalistic, almost clinical language to convince his audience that this solution as to the poverty in Ireland is an extraordinary economic solution which will solve all the peasant's tribulations. Through the use of phrases such as "having turned my thoughts for many years upon the subject and maturely weighed several schemes of other projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in the computation" and "I have been assured by a very knowing American acquaintance in London" Swift establishes credibility which enables to readers to be lulled into a sense of confidence accepting this absurd proposal. Through the literary techniques of sarcasm, irony, parody and incongruity, Swift makes this proposal utterly economic with everything being used, thus being believable. By using exact calculations the charge of nursing a baby is 2 shillings per annum, I believe no gentleman would repine to give 10 shillings for the carcass of a good fat baby," it appears that much time and thought has gone into this proposal thus it must work.
