Criminal Gangs
Cloward and Ohlin's differential opportunity theory is broken up into three different types of gangs. Conflict gang, criminal gang, and the retreat gang. I am going to focus on only the criminal gang. Criminal gangs are the most prevalent gangs in society, and they hold stability in society. "They teach youngsters the kinds of people to exploit, the necessary skills, the importance of loyal relationships with criminal associates, and the way to make the right connection with shady lawyers, bail bondsmen, crooked politicians, and corrupt police officers. Adolescent members of criminal gangs like adult criminals in the good neighborhood, are involved in extortion, fraud, theft and other activities that yield illegal income." (Alder, Muller & Laufer, 2004) A good example of this would be the all-famous Mr. Alfonso (Al) Capone. Al Capone born in the late 1800's, and was brought up in the heart of New York City. Hebecame very involved and connected with organized crime and murder investigations. He then moved to Chicago Illinois in the early 1920's, where he would later become one of the most famous and feared gang members to live in Chicago. In Chicago, just like he was in New York, he was involved in brutal murders, an
Little did Capone's mob know that Eliot Ness, and the rest of "the untouchables" are in hiding, ready to catch Capone's mob members in the action of illegal alcohol trade. One article form the late 1920's stated, "Twenty-five men were arrested; liquor was sized; slot machines smashed by the hundred. Front windows of the building were shattered, and a guest from a local hotel was showered in broken glass. Jimmy helps Ness recruit George Stone, a sharpshooter from the police academy. Ness's team of four comes together quickly. Ness is a straight-shooter who believes that the law, whether good or bad, is paramount. Canada did not have a prohibition law against alcohol and it was legal for Canadians to drink booze. He may not agree with prohibition, but, as long as that's the way the law is written, he will defend it, and that means getting Capone off the streets. (2004)CriminologyChicago Times (1929). " (Chicago Heights, 1929) Another article stated "Chicago's sixth bombing of the year, at 1 o'clock this morning, the bomb wrecked the front of a cigar store. Most organized crime is hard to get hold of and operates "under ground," and its associates go to great lengths to hid and confuse its activities from the lawful world.
