yoga

Yoga is the union between body and mind or body, mind and spirit. The traditional acceptance is of a union between one's individual consciousness and the universal consciousness (Swami Sivananda). It is a process by which one could achieve balance and harmony. It has been one of the most influential features of Hinduism. Its history starts some 5000 years ago and it has developed on the Indian peninsula. It has many different forms but all of them are based on the same four different paths and different principles. It has been proved beneficial in both physiological and psychological ways. Yoga is one of the six classical systems of Hindu philosophy ("Yoga").It is believed by scholars that it grew out of Stone Age Shamanism. Indian scholar Patanjali is traditionally regarded as the founder of yoga. It is also believed that it grew out of the Stone Age because of similarities between Hinduism and Mehrgarh, a Stone Age settlement ("History of Yoga"). An increase in sensitivity reinforces self-trust which is the confidence necessary to follow through and do the right things. To attain a healthy body and mind through the practice of yoga, it is based on five principles which are as follows:Proper Relaxation: It helps release tension in the muscles and rests the whole system. Raja yoga is the fourth path and is the science of physical and mental control. Yoga helps keep one's energy-tone at a level one likes. There are four main paths to reach towards the goal of yoga no matter if the goal is a better life or a union or a release from life. Proper Breathing: It teaches how to use lungs to their maximum capacity and how to control the breath. It originated some 5000 years ago and is beneficial in both physiological and psychological ways. It requires a lot of strength of will. Before practicing this path one needs to complete all the other three yogic paths. "The Yogi regards the physical body as an instrument for his journey toward perfection. Yoga has also been beneficial in psychological ways. "One of the most obvious things about having a body is that it tends to stiffen and tighten as one gets older, much like a plant that is tender and supple when young and becomes hard, dry, and woody with age" ( Schiffmann 024). Therefore it can be concluded that Yoga is the union between body and mind or body, mind and spirit. One can actually be more flexible, durable and stronger than as child.
