Auto Theft
In the Rio Grande Valley, people are not very worried about car theft. Some people even have the guts to leave their doors unlocked or windows open. That is because in some cities it is a bigger problem than other cities. Even today with the advanced technology on car alarms, there are still a numerous amount of car thefts all over the United States of America. This problem should not be put aside; every twenty seconds a car is stolen. In 1999, there were an estimated 1.2 million reported car thefts in the U.S. alone. If this number seems surprising to you, this was the lowest since 1985, and it is going to keep getting worse. Some people do get away with auto theft by altering the vehicle, but the justice system needs to make major improvements on stopping them and less lenient when they are stopped. Auto thieves can alter a car in one of three different ways: it will be dismantled for parts, exported, or cloned/made over. The vehicles are dismantled to supply the legal recycled-parts market. The stolen vehicle is taken to an illegal workshop or "chop shop" where it is completely or partially stripped. The demand for stolen top-of-the-line exported cars from North America is increasing all over the world.
The next generation auto theft guard is tucked into thousand of micro-stickers called Data Dots. If I were to get caught stealing a car, a slap on the wrist would not stop me from doing it again. The problem with this is that it sounds too easy. It is usually two years of imprisonment and a fine of two thousand dollars if any fine at all. In some places, where auto theft is a major problem, the numbers of auto thefts are decreasing. The justice system is not doing very well on stopping auto thieves, but in Fresno, California the justice system is getting remarkable results in stopping auto theft. Even though the justice system stops the thieves, they are not being charged properly. I wouldn't mind another slap on the wrist. Quebec and Ontario are also good and strategically positioned for exporting stolen vehicles. This is called "making over" a stolen vehicle. This makes the tiny tags virtually impossible to remove. The thieves then transfer the vehicle identification number of the severely damaged vehicle to the stolen vehicle, therefore giving it the identity of the damaged vehicle.
