To Kill a Mockingbird Themes

             In Harper Lee's novel "To kill a Mockingbird" she takes and leads many themes into an unforgettable story during the time period of the 1930's. Three main themes that are, heavily shown and presented are the themes of Racism, growing up and Love. The themes of growing up and love are presented very well between the main characters as is racism which is implied strongly and clearly and seen to continue throughout the novel, racism and discrimination in this novel is a great issue and a key point the author tries to show and relate to in the book. Harper Lee shows these three themes of Love, Racism and Growing up as they reflect themselves upon the characters, the atmosphere of the book and slowly entwine themselves into the story whilst it unfolds itself.
             The theme of growing up in this novel is very clear and situated with two main characters, Jean Louise Finch referred to as Scout and Jeremy Atticus Finch, also known as Jem. Jem and Scout change so rapidly in this book as they face and learn from there everyday lives and their influence of there very understanding father Atticus. Jem who is older than Scout begins to really change and grow at the age of twelve, he begins to mature and think more adult like he seems to really think and understand the reality of life and about his father's court case defending Tom Robinson a black man. This causes him to go through a time where people throw hurtful comments at him, but he tries to shrug it off. Although Jem is still a child, he can relate to the problem and discomfort, white and Black people have on each other. He begins to slowly grasp the concept that everyone is different and people do not appreciate each others race and color of skin.
