Peter Walsh was Clarissa's boyfriend before she married Richard. He was very much in love with Clarissa, but she refused. This made him to move to India, where he married a woman on the boat, to begin a new life. In India, he has failed in love as well as in work. He also blames it on Clarissa's rejection to his proposal, apparently the most important event of his existence. Peter is constantly living in the past and his memories preoccupy him all through the day. Peter does not perceive the beauty of the day in the detail in which it affects Cl
Despite his independent philosophy, Peter is still completely reliant on people and their social events. arissa, who appreciates every moment of life. Peter has always admired Clarissa in all her liveliness and charm, even though he hates her "frivolity," sophistication, and her snobbishness. Peter on the other hand is falling in love with a married woman, and the news hurts Clarissa. He instead associates everything to his past memories or dreams and keeps his thoughts inside his head. He spends most of his time in fantasy, following a pretty girl and creating an adventurous daydream of romance between them that suddenly when she enters a house. Peter is also hoping that Richard can help him get a job so he can support Daisy. Peter settles on going to Clarissa's party because he wants to ask Richard what those "conservative duffers" are doing in India. He is able to envision future outcomes by his instincts, like when he looks over to Clarissa and Richard and predicts that they will marry. Still, he attends her party, although he hates her parties. " He likes to enjoy himself and be around people. When he came back to London, all he ever thought about was the past and his relationship with Clarissa. No matter how much Peter tried to convince himself that he is no longer in love with Clarissa, he failed. Because of Peter's excess of emotions, he lives by his feelings.
