Research Report: Edgar Allen Poe's Texts

My research objective was; to look at and compare texts written by Edgar Allen Poe; to examine common themes between the texts; to show how the texts related to the Author and how the author created the mood and atmosphere; and to explain the style and structure of selected texts. It is very easy to associate Edgar Allen Poe with thoughts of dreariness and darkness, and with good reason. Much of his writing does reflect those very downcast moods. Edgar Allan Poe's popular short stories, "Ligeia," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Pit and the Pendulum", and "The Raven" serve as typical examples of his stylistic and thematic gifts. Although Poe's stories vary in their intensity, ideas, and characters, these examples particularly demonstrate his unique gifts of description, first-person narrative, and detail. His mastery of language and setting and his fascination with the workings of the human psyche, are reflected in this selected group of short stories and poems. What are the common themes in some short stories by Edgar Allen Poe, and how do they relate to him personally?Edgar Allan Poe is considered the father of both the h

In "The Raven" the narrator is seen trying to find relief - "surcease of sorrow" - from his grief at the death of his love, Lenore. Rather than saying for instance, "The first sight of the house depressed me", the narrator says, "I know not how it was-but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. This increases the tension and suspense for the reader. Many readers wonder how he came up with the ideas for his stories, and what type of a man would write such horrifying tales. The stylistic manipulation of sentence structure, from complex and even convoluted to short, and bullet-like, complement the whole of Poe's writing to make his work well worth the time to study and absorb. The "Pit and Pendulum" has to have the inch-by-inch exploration to give the reader the sense of claustrophobic fear, as well as the terror of the narrator finding danger every time he thinks he has rescued himself. This theme was particularly close to Poe, being a reflection of his life experience. His layers of description and complicated vocabulary often hide this element of his style. Related to this theme is the idea of destiny and the inevitability of fate. These are not just eerie stories, but stories in which Poe examines his fellow creatures, and understands them, to a startling, stunning degree. " The narrator uses the same attention to detail as he describes the bridal chamber he designs for his second bride.
