German Measles
Rubella (also known as German Measles) is a common contagious disease caused by a virus. Most cases of it are not serious. However, if a woman catches it during early pregnancy, it may result a number of birth defects, such as mental retardation, impaired vision and hearing, or malformations of the heart. The virus causing Rubella is an airborne virus. This makes the virus extremely contagious. Two or three weeks after contact with the virus, a person may develop several symptoms. These include a runny nose, sore throat, and mild fever. Pink, slightly raised spots may appear o
The infected person is contagious seven days before a rash appears and five days after it appears. The vaccine used to treat Rubella is a live attenuated viral vaccine. In some cases of Rubella there are no symptoms at all, but that does not usually occur. These symptoms and others usually disappear in a few days. Other countries conduct selective immunization. In some developing countries with widespread childhood transmission of Rubella, very few women of childbearing age are susceptible to the infection. Once the immune system has generated the antibodies to destroy the attenuated form of the virus, it has the ability to detect and prevent the full strength virus from getting a foothold, thus creating natural immunity, which usually lasts for the rest of the person's life. Lymph nodes on the back of the scalp, behind the ears, and on the side of the neck may become tender as well. The main target group for the Rubella vaccine is women of childbearing age. MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) is standard in the United States of America. References:- World Book Encyclopedia vol. n the face and may spread to the torso and limbs. This means that medical researchers take a sample of the virus and create a greatly weakened version of it, which the body's immune system can fight more easily.
