story of an hour

A major theme that stands out in, "A Story of an Hour" is being trapped. Louise was trapped not only by an overbearing husband, but also by her belief system. She believed that her wifely duties consisted of being docile and obedient to her husband.
Another literary work that encompasses this theme is the poem, "In the Room of The Bride-Elect". In this poem, the bride to be also feels trapped. Parallel to each other though, the bride has not yet begun her marriage and Louise is in the middle of hers.
Entrapment is a situation that is not easily undone. Feelings of being trapped can be so overbearing that one cannot see any other outlet than the one at hand and thus, are forced to stay within the situation. This is true within both of the works, "A Story of an Hour" and "In the room of the Bride Elect." They both see the outlet, but they also see that it is unattainable at this point. Louise Mallard saw her outlet for a brief moment and like a prisoner being let free, savored in her freedom. Her realization both gave her a glimmer of hope and a feeling of hopelessness the same time. She didn'tdid not quite know what to do with her newly found freedom and felt she had nothing to live for.
In the same respect, the bride to be also felt that she too had nothing to live for as her future with her ill chosen husband seemed bleak and desolate.
This theme pertains to both those who are married and those who are not. Whether or not you are married, you can still feel trapped by a person or situation. Many people realize that they chose the wrong person when it is too late. The era that these works were written in is unlike our society today which, which is full of divorces and annulments all the time.
That may or may not be a good thing. People in general should choose their partners more carefully in order to avoid feeling trapped or having to leave a relationship. Ha...
