Da Vinci
When one thinks of a great painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer, scientist, an intelligent man and a well-rounded person, Leonardo da Vinci is a perfect example. With his precise drawings, anatomical studies of people, animals, and plants, studies of astronomy, geology, geometry and optics, and his designs of flying machinery, Leonardo is a supreme genius of the Renaissance. His creative ideas in all aspects of his knowledge have inspired many people and things around the world. Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15th, 1452. The village of Vinci, which is located in central Italy, is where Leonardo was raised as a child. He was born out of wedlock between Ser Peiro da Vinci and a peasant woman, Caterina. Around the late 1460's, Leonardo moved to Florence, where he entered the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, a leading painter and sculptor in Italy, and became an apprentice. While Leonardo was completing his apprenticeship for several years, he worked along side with Verrocchio on the painting The Baptism of Christ. His paintings however remained in Milan and made him very famous. This portrait was painted on a 77 x 53cm poplar wood. Because Leonardo was interested in physics, many of his drawings were technological. With these drawings, he would use them to try to understand the human bodily systems, such as human reproduction and the circulation of blood. The importance of Leonardo da Vinci can be described as one of the greatest scientific minds of the Italian Renaissance (World Book, 201). Leonardo da Vinci had a remarkable event happen to him. Even though this mind thought of homosexuality is understandable during this time period, the accusation of Leonardo being a homosexual does not in any way diminish the importance of all his achievements. He was also a sculptor, where he planned a huge monument of the duke's father mounted on a horse (World Book, 199). Unfortunately, due the fact he used a new technique of painting, he was unable to complete this project. The Florentine government hired Leonardo and Michelangelo to decorate the walls for the new hall for the city council. Many other important works of Leonardo da Vinci are The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, The Annunciation, Madonna with the Carnation, Madonna of the Yarnwinder, Saint Jerome and The Leda and the Swan. One of his final drawings, The Deluge, was completed in 1515. On April 8th, 1476, he was accused of having a homosexual affair with Jacopo Saltarelli, who happened to be a model (Island of Freedom, 3). An example of this is painters trying to imitate Leonardo's knowledge of perspective and anatomy, and his accurate observations of nature (World Book, 201).
