China

The Chinese say that humans cannot leave their native land as trees cannot leave their native soil. When I was thirteen, I was uprooted, replanted, and I almost died.

It was another normal summer day in Shanghai, China.I walked home with my friends, dressed in blue and white uniform, discussing the impossible final we had just taken. As I came home and entered the crowded, six-story apartment, I was surprised to see my mom standing in the hallway, the mother who had left me for America since I was one. She wanted me to come to America for the summer ¡ª Many Chinese dreamt about a life in America, but I didn¡¯t want to leave.I didn¡¯t want to leave my grandparents, who spoiled me all my life; I didn¡¯t want to leave my friends, whom I planned an exciting summer with, and I didn¡¯t want to leave Shanghai, a city whose air was always full of innocent simplicity, a city which I called home. But I finally gave in.I told myself it would only

. . .

But I caught on with the language quickly, and I made three or four new friends. I took advantage of the piano that I didn¡¯t have in China and practiced an hour a day, learning ¡°Fur Elise¡± in six months and winning several competitions; I raised my grades from C¡¯s to A¡¯s and B¡¯s, started taking honors courses in 9th grade and gradually increased my workload every year; I spent my Saturdays attending physics lectures at Fermi National Acceleratory Lab and earning college credits at the community college; I put my talent to use by joining math team and volunteering to teach at the local Chinese school¡ But most importantly, I made many close friends who are just as loyal, sweet, and fun as my friends in China. The little tree was on the verge of dying.

So unfortunately I have to contradict my introduction statements. be two months as I walked through the terminal. No one could experience the happiness I experienced four months ago, as I proudly walked out of my first honors English class with a solid A I had worked so hard to earn. I asked if they had lied to me, and they would consistently reply, ¡°if you think so. I was the student body president, now I sit at the corner, being the invisible.

Summer passed and things went wrong. ¡±As I sat in front of my computer dictionary, looking up almost every fifth word, spending more than six hours on this seven-page story, tears finally streamed down my cheek. Little did I know that I was leaving everything behind. The language barrier brought me a skill that not many possess: being able to speak, read, and write two of the most-spoken languages in the world. I cried, for days and nights, begging my parents to let me go home, but it seemed like nobody cared.
