Oedipus the King
Oedipus the king is a play that demonstrates how our lives are destined to take a certain path. We can alter our path in life but not change our destiny. Oedipus a man freely choosing from a series of events which lead to his own ruin. In the play Lauis, King of Thebes was warned that his child would kill him. His son Oedipus was warned that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Both men did not accept their destiny; they direct their energy to events in their lives that they could control. However, with the birth of a son, the death of a king and the marriage to his mother, the prophecy would be fulfilled. Lauis learned from the Oracle that his child would one-day kill him and marry his wife Jocasta. When the child was born, fulfilling the first prophecy. Queen of Thebes pierced his feet and left him abandoned on top of a mountain to die. The baby was rescued by a shepherd. The shepherd named him Oedipus. The shepherd took the baby to the king and queen of Corinth. They
Oedipus found out that Lauis and Jocasta had a son that they left to die in the mountains. However, Lauis had been warned that death at his son's hands was near, and he wanted to make sure thatthe baby he left on the mountainside was dead. Oedipus promised that he would find the killer of Lauis, even though he is warned to stop seeking the truth. When Oedipus was driving his chariot, he encountered Lauis on the road. By now Jocasta had discovered the truth and committed suicide. Oedipus is eager to find the truth in hopes that someone will tell him something entirely different. Than a messenger arrives from Crointh, revealing that Oedipus is not Polybus son. When Oedipus met Lauis on the road they quarreled and Oedipus killed Lauis, thus fulfilling the second part of the prophecy and opening up the way to fulfilling the second part. Until he realized that he was his father murdererand has married his mother. Oedipus pity the suffering people of his kingdom and to went to the seers to find out how he could lift the plague from Thebes. Trying to find ways to change his destiny. But than realize that it was his own doing that lead him to the answers. He actively sought his own doom through he was warmed many time not to pursue the truth. The events was bound to happen no matter what Oedipus may have done to avoid it he was controlled by the gods. Jocasta bore him four children, his own offspring and his brothers and sisters.
