Living to Lie and Lying to Liv

             Life and death are two things that have been contrasted since the dawn of intelligent life on this earth. People have always wondered about the same fundamental questions what happens when one dies, and more importantly what are life and death. Life can be defined as the interval between birth and death. All the ways life can be defined are to cynical. They downplay the true glory of it and make it something merely scientific, but since our view of the world today is just beginning to open up to new unscientific views this is the definition to be used for now. Death, being the opposite of life, is simply defined as the termination of life. These definitions of life and death bring up some very important questions such as what is life, what happens when one dies, and the romantic ideal of having and honorable death worth pursuing? I do not believe there is a definite answer to any of these questions but I believe that one should follow what is sincerely believed to be right. That is the main reason God gave us an intuition so we can distinguish what's right and wrong and what's worth dying for.
             In Arthur Millers the Crucible we find, John Proctor, a character struggling with uncertainty. Proctor was trying to answer if his cause was one worth dying for he had to decide on and answer in a matter of minutes. This is an immense burden to place on any individual because they have to answer a question that has no definite answer relying only on pure faith. At first Proctor bends a bit stating "I want my life" (137). He was mainly influenced to say this because Elizabeth, his wife, says "as you will, I would have it. I want you living, John. That's sure."(136). Proctor later feels a sense of humiliation and defeat when Danforth demands that he sign a paper declaring himself guilty so that he can be made an example. With Rebecca nurse
