the great gatsby
The Great Gatsby is a truly great American novelThe Great Gatsby is about the American Society at its worst and the downfall of those who attempt to reach its unachievable goals. It is through this idea of the corruption of American Society that F. Scott Fitzgerald became so successful in this novel. The novel, The Great Gatsby incorporates perplexed characters, symbolism and the theme of the American dream to catch the attention of any willing reader. These aspects of the story are what make The Great Gatsby a truly great American novel. Firstly Gatsby's American life was directly corrupted by the way he made money, found love and lived his life from day to day. The way in which Gatsby made money was a despicable practice. Gatsby's bootlegging business made him millions. The time during Prohibition in the 1920's was great time to take advantage of the lack of alcohol and sell it to people who would buy it for more than it's worth. The book and Fitzgerald didn't reference straight to this crime but implied that the American Society was guilty in its contact with the problem. The complexity and thought that was put in the story to adjust to the time and the era it was written in makes the novel flow and keeps readers interest
East Egg also represents the "old money. Gatsby often made the reader think about personal experiences, he made us wonder how life would be like living in such a way. "There's something funny about a fellow that'll do a thing like that. And consequently it is clear that it is these aspects that make up such a thought provoking American novel. Later in the story when Gatsby has Daisy the importance of the light diminishes. 127) Gatsby needed to have an enormous mansion so he could feel confident enough to try to win Daisy. Gatsby wanted her and wouldn't be satisfied otherwise. The American dream soon became corrupted, in the Great Gatsby as Gatsby got carried away with this ambition. The light symbolizes hope and dream. Tom and Daisy live on the East which is far more refined and consists of people with more money and a higher social status. Virtually anything in the novel can be taken as a symbol, from the weather, to the colors used to describe an object. The eyes themselves look down on a world and don't judge it by the social classes or beauty.
