             John, Elizabeth, and Abagail Williams are all characters in "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. Both John and Elizabeth Proctor are round and dynamic characters, meaning complex and changed. Abagail Williams on the other hand, is a flat and static character, one that doesn't change nor is complex. These are traits from their characterization. All three; John, Elizabeth, and Abby all go through a severe test or trial, better known as a crucible. After over coming their crucibles, the characters have a better understanding or knowledge, an insight.
             In the beginning, John Proctor was a stubborn man. He didnt want to hear of his crime against his wife, and it would anger him deeply if he did. "Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby"(23), John says to Abagail when she reminds him of his cheating on his wife. He doesnt want to be reminded of Abby, nor of those memories that she carries with her. John's crucible was to admitt to committing adultry infront of the court house, to try and win his wifes freedom back. "I ahve known her, sir. I have known her."(110). John is admitting to the court that he has slept with Abagail Williams, now he is open about the relationship he had with her, he is no longer stubborn to talk about it. This change in John's characteristics makes him a dynamic character, going from stubborn to openhearted.
             Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, is also a dynamic character. "Then go and tell her she's a whore. What ever promise she may sense - break it, John, break it!"(62). Elizabeth is very controlling and suspicious aobut John and Abagail, she thinks that there is still something between them. Elizabeth's crucible was being tried as a witch. She was taken away from her family and labeled as a witch. After John is committed as a witch too, Elizabeth realizes that he had always loved her, and only her. "As you will, I would have it."(136).
