Anorexia Nervosa
Many previous studies in Anorexia Nervosa have shown that the reasons for it are as complex and various as the regions and societies it occurs in, Most studies have been limited to the U.S. and Europe or other equally economically thriving countries. But in this essay I wish to focus on Anorexia in such Confucianist societies as Japan or Korea; which in Asia are the most economically successful nations up to date. Most of the data provided within this essay is derived from my own harrowing experience with Anorexia while living in Korea for a span of 18 years, of which the previous 8 were commited to my fight with Anorexia. And the experience with other individuals with the same problems that I encountered while institutionized in medical facilities. I. Family Values Based on Confucianism: The First Born and the Woman In every family in Korea there is a patriarchal figure, mainly the grandfather. And then There is the heir apparent father. And then there is the first born son which is to be groomed to be next inline to preserve the family. The first born son is vehemently trained in many ways. He is trained to first of all respect his parents and grandparents
Moreover, severing family ties, which, would probably be the resolution given to the individual by the father if he or she decides to choose new values is a lot to give up. ± this is one common sign of anorexia building up. And I wish to emphasize the fact that it states that depression does commonly lead to unnatural obsessions with eating, which in turn leads to anorexia or bulimia, both of which are deadly mental and physical illnesses. `³²³a A¥¼¼ ºÎµ¿¼c' This is a Korean term that means men and woman are not allowed to sit together from the age of 7. This kind of society collisioning head on with American values of individuality and free speech; the old generation with the new generation but with a gap so wide it had never been seen or expected. As incredible as it may seem it is true. As long as Korean society continues to modernize in its present pace the psychological problems of the youth group will also grow. Where do I fit? This overwhelming question in many cases that I saw resulted in depression. In my opinion, neither generation was at fault. Most of these twisted Confucian perspectives were originated in the Chosen dynasty which ended in 1910 with the rule of colonial Japan. living there for 9 years and then moving to Korea was subjected to the same thing. The parents may have very high expectations for their child, or show affection only when the child accomplishes some difficult goal.
