Araby

The story seems to take on a lonely feeling. The story starts off on North Richmond Street, described as being "blind and quiet, except when the Christian Brother's School set the boys free." This description informs the teller the inhabitants are of the Christian belief, which reinforces my belief of all the hidden religious messages within the story. The boy lived in an old house that had previously been inhabited by a priest, who had died and left his furniture to his sister, and all other belongings to other institutions. How could a priest with such a kind, giving-nature have so much to leave to others upon his death? If he were truly a "charitable" priest, would he not have very little to give at the time of his death? Perhaps th

" Why would the merchants look down upon a man? He wanted to purchase a present, instead, he was in a place he didn't know, and saw the darkness wasn't around him, it was him. In the bazaar: "he gazed up into the darkness, I saw myself as a creature driven and driven by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger. " This paragraph implies the lanterns are trying to light the dark, but the dark is too vast for such a pathetic attempt, so why try? The boy has a deep fascination, a stalking like quality for the girl. is shows the human side of him; greed. His uncle was running late, but the boy waited. The boys favourite book, The Memorirs of Vidocq, which he found among the priests belongings was very symbolic for this. " His life was accompanied by her, even though he did not even know her. "At nine o'clock I heard my uncle's latchkey in the halldoor". He approached a young lady and 2 gentlemen talking, which basically ignored him, and looked at him as a "messenger of god wearing a disguise. "The space of sky above us was the colour of ever-changing violet and towards it the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns. He will never achieve this, as he's a hopeless romantic. The book was about a Police Commissioner who was also a thief and able to hide his crimes. It was almost as if a regular person, who's greedy, a thief, or lies, can put on a costume and become a messenger of god. The boy did not have enough money for the bazaar; so he turned to his uncle. Within the story, there are several references to the sky.
