review of the novel 1984

             1984 by George Orwell is a book describing a supposedly socialist government that is more totalitarian. The main character of 1984, Winston Smith, lives in this totalitarian world where the government tries to control every aspect of the people's lives. The totalitarian government succeeds in controlling the people's lives because it uses its powerful mind control technology. By living under the control of the government, the citizens of Oceania lead unconscious and fearful lives, and they totally lack individualism.
             The government uses different mind control technology to control people. One example of the mind control technology is the telescreen. A telescreen is like a television, but it has only one channel. The Party's propaganda is about the only thing to be heard on the telescreen besides bits of news that don't really matter anyway. The other thing that a telescreen does is to monitor people. The telescreen can see and hear everything. There is no privacy. The Party knows everything and can see what any person is doing anytime of the day. In Winston's squalid apartment there is a telescreen with a camera inside. Winston's every movement is observed by the Thought Police through this telescreen twenty-four hours a day. "Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it.... It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time." (6) "The telescreen could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely." (6)
             Another example of the Party's mind control technology is doublethink. Doublethink is the very essence of the social culture in Oceania. It is the ability to hold two conflicting facts as true even where they are total opposites.
