The Right To Choose To Die

I believe in freedom of choice at the end of life. I believe that no government entity should insist on a particular course of death, and that depriving individuals of either choice or dignity in this process is wrong. I believe that euthanasia should be legalized because the suffering from the symptoms of an illness, and often the side effects of medication damage the quality of peoples' lives. I believe that technology often overshadows humanity in the fight to save lives. I believe that a person has a right to personal dignity in death.
As Martin Luther King said on the eve of his assassination, no one is truly free to live until one is free to die.
I would like to give you a couple of definitions:
Euthanasia is defined as, the deliberate ending of life of a person suffering from an incurable disease.
Physician Assisted Suicide is when a physician provides an individual with the information, guidance, and means to take his or her own life
Through medical advances, those who are chronically ill are being helped in the quest to alleviate symptoms and those who might have become ill in the past are being cured. These advances have also allowed those who would have died from head injuries, car crashes, gunshot wounds and other accidents to live. The advances are also providing an improved quality of life for those who experience medical success, but what about those who do not? One of the risks that come with the ability to lengthen life and save those whom otherwise would have died is that there are some that are being held in sort of a neutral zone between life and death. In addition there are patients who are diagnosed with terminal illnesses and the advances of the medical community cause them to suffer much longer than they would have in the past. Shouldn't we have the right to choose?
