Love Essay

             Brave New World and Like Water for Chocolate.
             Love is a factor that plays a vital role in the choices a person makes and often those choices leads one to make decisions based solely on this emotion. Though love can guide one to success, it can manipulate a person into taking drastic measures, which eventually leads to their downfall. In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, love influences the main characters to do things, which they would not have done under regular circumstances. Both characters experience this powerful emotion and are driven by it. Unfortunately, the powerful, mountain moving, emotion of love ends in their demise. The anti-hero, John from the satirical novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Tita from the poignant tale Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel are manipulated by love, which leads them to experience deception, display hate, and ultimately results in their death.
             In both the satirical novel and the poignant tale, love is undeniably the main factor that causes deception, whether it's deception of oneself or deception of others. In "Brave New World" John falls in love with Lenina and is unable to comprehend that she is from a different society with different ethics and morals from that of John's. Also, John shows his love through devotion while, Lenina's love is shown through lust. This idea comes into conflict with the anti-hero's beliefs. John's love blinds him of his values and in a desperate attempt to hold onto those principles he "[flings] himself against an armful of green spikes" (Huxley 230). By inflicting pain upon himself, John tries to deny his love for Lenina in order to prevent his values and beliefs from failing him.
