East of Eden, Adam's perspecti

The day had started out smoothly; a day like any other. I woke up in the morning with the same smile I'd carried on my face since I'd married my precious Cathy the year before. Never would I have guessed that this sunny day would be the one my beloved wife would shoot me and then leave me forever.
As I arose for the day I looked over to my sleeping wife and smiled with pleasure. I thought to myself that she had become even more beautiful since she delivered our two beautiful sons just two weeks earlier. Looking in on the boys I beamed with pride. Though they had not yet been given names, I knew that the ones eventually given to them would bespeak their mother's beauty and their father's courage.

Later in the evening I walked up to Cathy's room to find her rummaging through her belongings. It seemed as if she were readying to leave. When I asked her about it she simply looked at me and said "I'm leaving you, Adam." The simple statement stunned me. After pleading with her for some time she finally went back into her room, locking the door behind her. I thought I had won the argument until she came out again toting a pistol in her hands. Before I could say anything a shot rang out hitting me squarely in the shoulder and forcing me to the ground. At this, Cathy took her valise and walked away from me for the last time.
I lay there on the floor by her room for what seemed like hours before my servant, Lee, found me. After that I lay in my own bed for months with a bleak look on my face. Nothing mattered anymore- not my land, my house, not even my two sons. All I knew was that she was gone and probably never coming back.
