Speech Pretty Woman, Pretty / Woman (Pause) is this concept no more than a dream is anybody in reality a metaphorical pretty woman on the inside or is it ones exterior appearance that labels an individuals value.What is it that makes an individual unique, wealthy, and superior? Is it ones clothes, money or ones name? In 19th century England issues such as this were a prominent topic. With a rising new social class established with vested interests in maintaining its social economic base of power and prestige. This group known as the Middle Class developed artificial boundaries which separated themselves from the undeserving poor of the Working class .and upheld a firm reputation in practices manners fashion etc.In the multi award winning film Pretty Woman the middle class of 19th century England is personified in the character of Edward Lewis. Edward represents the wealthy industrial class of the new world America. America is a nation free of an aristocracy. In the U.S wealthy individuals such as Edward made their wealth from business as a capitalist society. Individuals and classes such as these place immense emphasis on the external appearance of the individual.


*The woman seated at the desk is higher than Vivian indicating superiority and power although the colour of her clothes is ironic white for purity and red for sexuality. Allows help from others other than being completely self reliantChanging perspective-*allows a friendship with men without sexual immorality*Stuckey tells Vivian he knows she is a prostitute and treats her completely different than he had prior to his discovery she feels violated and degraded . Director Garry Marshal has used various methods to shows this transition and changing perspectives. Although they have feelings of affection towards them, they feel that they must leave because, if they stay, their self-worth will never be realized by the men. where as Lisa is a flower girl whom repeatedly quotes "Im a good girl I am" signifying her belief that despite she is of working class morality and of little wealth she makes a respectable living and does not need to sell her body or her assets to increase her power. Do you label others according to appearance or see the pretty woman inside each of us. Camera shots-*Camera continuously pans over to Stuckey; this indicates that he is everywhere a spy observing everything that is going on. Both are wealthy, and serve as "rescuers" to Eliza and Vivian. Both women are bribed and bought, and both are given new, expensive clothing signifying their transformation and transition between classes and their growth in self respect and realisation (This is shown when Vivian adorns herself in the colour purple representing royalty) Higgins and Edward Lewis are likewise similar characters. Brown representing her stained innocence and white for purity. A famous saying is if you love something let it go if it comes back to you it is yours. In the texts Pygmalion and Pretty Woman both central characters of Eliza Doolittle and Vivian Ward are women that are struggling to survive on their own, on the streets. In today's world we as a society seem to have an immense problem with self image.
