A Psychological view of Fight
Fight Club is about a man named Jack, who like most of the men his age today, feel trapped in the working class. Jack is very stressed out and has been suffering frominsomnia for 6 months. He is 30 years old and employed as a recall coordinator for amajor car company. Jack lives in a condo full of expensive furniture which he says,"defines him as a person". Even with all of the comforts of modern society that fill hiscondo he is unhappy, unsatisfied and sleep deprived. He goes to his doctor for insomniaand narcolepsy complaining that he wakes up and doesn't remember how he got theresometimes. He asks for drugs from his doctor but is denied. His doctor tells him if hewants to see real pain to visit the testicular cancer support group at a local church. When Jack attends this group he finds he can let go and cry even though hedoesn't have testicular cancer. Jack says, "losing all hope equals freedom". That night hegoes home and sleeps like a baby. Rather quickly Jack became addicted to supportgroups. He attended groups for sufferers of brain parasites, blood parasites, tuberculosis, cancer, sickle cell, and melanoma. Jack feels that if people thought you were dying they
Jack experiences 7 out of the 18 symptoms I listed. Everyone thought Tyler was Tyler and just crazy alittle bit. When he left the support groupit was because he became addicted to fighting and then needed that. Shortly after meeting Tyler, Jack returns home to find his condo containing all ofhis comforts that "define him" destroyed in an explosion. Hecreated Tyler because Tyler was everything he wanted to be but wasn't. Everyone wants to feel accepted and needed. Heneeds these groups to sleep and be happy just like a drug. He is becoming more and more like Tyler. As time passes Jack notices Tyler is not around as much as he used to be and Jackis sleeping a lot more and now pushed out of the loop more often. Jack tells Tyler he is by far the mostinteresting single serving friend he has ever met and Tyler understands what he means. He says he wakes up in places without knowing how he got there. Tyler makes soap for aliving and has the exact same brief case as Jack. He needs this furniture to define himself as a person.
