New Historicism

             Of late movies like Titanic make more or less a new historicist attempt in the field of cinema. Based on true events, the movie recounts the tragedy from the perspective of a 90-year-old survivor. The director successfully reconstructs the occurrence linking the past and the present placing the survivor at the center, thereby emphasizing its significance. Keeping the main event at the background, the director brings the people involved to the foreground. He focuses on the aftermath, the calamity and the loss, leaving a lasting impression of the great tragedy in our minds. In the literary world Dickens was a forerunner in presenting history from the perspective of the poor. In a sense either knowingly or unknowingly he was practicing New Historicism. In most simplified terms , New Historicism carries out a "parallel reading of literary and non – literary texts usually of the same historical period" (Barry 172) In Louis Montrose's words, New Historicists pay attention to "the textuality of history and the historicity of texts"( qtd. in Barry ,172). Till the dawn of Postmodernism , post structuralism and consequently New Historicism , history was viewed as something absolute , objective , true and something not be questioned. In the present century it is agreed that history depends on who , has recorded the events. Taking into account the writer , his background and his attitude towards the happenings around him the objectivity assigned to history is now negated. There is no History but histories , that are rampant in the postmodernist era. It is the writer and the reader who is to decide which is true or correct.
