Creation

             Throughout time there have been many different creation stories and myths, but why are some so different? The answer may be found in the culture of the author or the time period of the creation story. Genesis is believed to be composed between 2000-1500 B.C. "Paradise Lost" by John Milton was written in 1674 A.D. That is quite a large gap of time between these two creation stories, which may account for some of the differences. These differences become more apparent when one considers all that goes into creation. The differences between them have an impact on how the stories are interpreted and understood today.
             The book of Genesis is most well known for being the first book of the bible and the creation story believed by Christians and Jews. The creation story of Genesis focuses on one God. God was the all mighty creator of all that exists today and what is believed to exist "In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). God also saw how good his creations were and he was satisfied with them "God called the dry land "the earth," and the basin of the water he called "the sea." God saw how good it was." (1:10) Genesis portrays God as being full of power "Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light." (1:3) There was seven periods of time during the creation. Six of the time periods were times of creation and work. The seventh day was the day of rest that came to be known as the Sabbath, which is believed to be holy.
             John Milton's "Paradise Lost" contains one Supreme Being "God." God is portrayed as being all powerful in this creation story "So spake th' almightie, and to what he spake His Word, the filial Godhead, gave effect." (Paradise Lost 174-175) Creation also takes place over seven different time periods, with the last day being a day of rest.
