Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. He was the oldest son of the Rev. and Mrs. Martin Luther King. He was named Michael Luther after his father but he later change it to Martin Luther after the great church leader. Bad racial experiences made a long lasting impression on Martin. One day the parents of the boys Martin played with told him they could not play with him anymore because he was black and they were white. That broke his heart and he ran home and told his mother. His mother tried to explain to him why it happen,so she talk to him about racism and prejudice people. She told him that although blacks were no longer slaves, they were not really free. Martin grew up doing and liking what other kids like baseball, basketball and wrestling, but he liked reading most of all. He liked reading mostly about famous people in black historyand he liked to learn new words and use them. He also liked listing to his father and the other ministers use strong words when they preached. He wanted to follow in their footsteps. He made words his weapon for defense and offense. He spoke all over the country, begging for nonviolent ways of gaining civil rights. A graduate of Antioch College in Ohio she and Martin were married in June 1953. King gave a chilling sermon at Masonic Temple which he was very sacred to do. " "I may not make it with you but we as a people will get to the promise land " some says he predicted his death then. His father performed the ceremony at her home in Alabama. Martin's "I Have A Dream Speech" moved alot of people in differant ways, and is known as his greatest speech ever. King arrived in Memphis and checked into room 306 of the Lorraine Motel. And so at seventeen Martin was elected to become a Baptist minister. Coretta had grown up in segregation too.
