Today I am going to be talking to you about the history of the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States. I'm going to start off by telling you about how I first became interested in where the Star Spangled Banner originated. Then I am going to talk a little about the War of 1812 and how it led to a young Baltimore attorney to write a poem called "The defense of Fort McHenry". And finally, I'm going to talk about how that poem became the national anthem. Most people know that Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner, but they probably couldn't tell you how he came to write it. A couple of months ago, I couldn't either. What changed this was a special I saw on the History Channel about the War of 1812. Prior to watching this special, I knew absolutely nothing about the War of 1812; I didn't even know what countries were involved in it. Now that I've talked about how I learned about the history of the Star Spangled Banner, a little of the background of the War of 1812 and Francis Scott Key writing "The defense of Fort McHenry, and how that poem was put to music and became our national anthem. Soon after, he refined the poem and called "The defense of Fort McHenry". Beanes, but only after they had finished their attack on Baltimore. In the morning, he was so overjoyed to see that the flag was still flying over Fort McHenry; he wrote some of his thoughts down in a poem on the back of a letter. onths I did some reading and learned even more about the War of 1812. And as you're listening to it, I'd like everybody to keep this story I've just told you in mind. Now that I've talked about how I came to learn about the origin of the Star Spangled Banner and the events of the War of 1812 that led Francis Scott Key to write his poem "The defense of Fort McHenry", I'm going to talk about how that poem became our national anthem. Today, I would like to close with it. But before I get to that, I want to talk a little about the main events of the War of 1812 that led up to this. Beanes was captured and held on the British ship, the Tonnant. A local attorney named Francis Scott Key went to the Tonnant to try and negotiate the release of Dr. Picture Francis Scott Key captive on that British war ship, waiting to find out who had won the battle and the joy he felt when he saw that the flag was still there.
