Miss Brill

             In Katherine Mansfield "miss Brill", characterisation, irony, and point of view is used to tell the story of a woman, and involves us in some way in what seems to be her daily routine on a Sunday, this all due to the fact that the story is told in the third person narrative so we get a clearer image of what she is really like.
             We get an extremely clear view of what the character of this woman truly is, as we see all the events happening in the third person narrative, so it is like we are monitoring her step by step. This helps to emphasis what her character truly is as by seeing her from that point of view, everything is revealed and we also get to know what she feels and each and every moment of the story and also the way she acts and her mood throughout the whole story. " Smoothed the newspaper as though it was the manuscript of her part and said gently: yes I have been an actress for a long time". From this quote we can see 3 good values of writing in the third person narrative. We firstly see the way in which he touches things we see what she is doing and we know the tone in which she is speaking in, all this aspects gives us a greater knowledge of the character. Looking at the story from the third person narrative also helps to add to the plot, as the narrator asks indirect questions, which we then get a direct response from the character itself "what was it? No-no not sadness" this direct response from Miss Brill herself insures that we get the right image, so that we do not twist the plot as all this is used by the narrator to emphasis towards the plot.
             Miss Brill's character is put through indirectly. We get to know her character better as events occur.
