Figurative Language

             Figurative language is one of most widely used ways to convey tone to a reader, in the poem "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath it is clear that she has perfected the use of figurative language to show the characters feelings towards her father. Sylvia Plath uses in depth metaphors, great allusions, graphic symbolism and an alliteration that runs through the whole poem as just some of her weapons to reach out and express the tone to the reader.
             In this poem the title is quite deceiving of the true nature of the poem. The title leads into the aspect of a somewhat friendly poem, maybe even a slight bit humorous, but once you begin the second stanza you realize the intense anger and obscene hate this poem is trying to express. The line "Daddy, I had to kill you,"(l.6) is an obvious beacon showing the pure hate felt for her father and this line also single handedly sets the tone for the rest of the poem.
             In the ninth stanza the author starts the array of allusions to compare her dad to none other than Hitler, the German commander who tried to exterminate the Jews. It is known that Sylvia Plath's dad was a strict authoritarian so this explains some of her thought process in relating him to Hitler. "I have always been scared of you, With your Luftwaffe, your gobbledygoo," (l. 41-42) she shows her direct correlation of her dad to Hitler with this metaphor that opens the ninth stanza. The Luftwaffe is the German air force which would have been under control directly by Hitler, and in this line she refers to it as his Luftwaffe, giving her dad the same power as Hitler. This comparison is important because we can somewhat understand that she is drawn to this power. Another important item we can see in this quote is the use of the word "gobbledygoo", throughout the poem there is the constant repetition of the phonetic sound of oo.
