Violence Who's fault?
SCHOOL VIOLENCE: WHOSE FAULT IS IT? Dustin DiLiddo Violence in our school systems; this is a problem that has existed with regularity for the past 40 to 50 years but has never brought to societies attention until recently. Why are we just now hearing about it? You ask. Well, violence in school has always thought to be a minority problem because the majority of incidents occurred in poor urban areas populated by blacks and Latinos. Most of this violence was attributed to gang violence instead of school issues. Not until recent events occurring in the past few years has society realized that school violence is not isolated to one race, income, or intelligence level but crosses all boundaries of America's social fabric. It wasn't until April 20, 1999 when the bullets hit home and middle class suburban America felt the pain cause by school violence. The morning of April 20, 1999 two friends went bowling before stopping by home and picking up some supplies and heading off to school. The supplies they were picking up were guns and ammunition. When their grades began to slip in school only then were they given attention from there parents. One possible reason is hostile behaviour in childhood, caused by harsh and inconsistent parents. The real cause of school violence doesn't lie in a shiny plastic disc; it lies in our homes and schools. At the end of the rampage 17 people lay dead including the killers who took their own lives and many more people severally injured. " MGM Films, 2002Mind over media. Maybe if Eric and Dylan's parents weren't so busy and paid closer attention to their boys, we could have avoided this tragedy. Everyone wondered "Whose fault is this?" After all these young men where from good families and went to a good school, Why'd they do it? The media found plenty of reasons in no time, music, movies, and videogames. The warning signs are there if you take the time to look. They grew up with busy parents and were often left to their devices. It was the hardcore death metal, violent films, and shoot 'em up videogames that caused two seemingly good kids to turn bad overnight. They figure if the only way they can be acknowledged is for doing wrong then it's better than being ignored. They wanted everyone to know their names and they accomplished that goal.
