Character analysis on Giovanni

             A relationship bound with unusual circumstances and secrets is perfect material to write a story on. Nathaniel Hawthorne puts the situation to life in his 1843 story "Rappiccini's Daughter." The story is set in Padua, a city in Northern Italy among a famous Botanist's garden, referred to as Garden of Eden. Rappiini names Giovanni and Beatrice, Adam and Eve. Minds revolving in confusion around poisons and deception tell a very interesting story. Through analysis of Giovanni's personality, the story is better explained.
             Giovanni is a very curious person. He stays in a room overlooking Rappiccini's garden and he constantly stares upon Beatrice. He looks in awe at the amazing lush garden full of life, and is then at the beginning, he sees a beautiful young girl. He is so filled with questions and cant wait to get the answers. Emma, the housekeeper, tells him that the girl is the daughter of Rappiccini, and that her name is Beatrice. Still so curious to know more, he even gains access to a secret passage into the garden to see his beloved Beatrice. Being eager and curious he overlooks every warning not to pursue a relationship with Beatrice.
             Though all signs seem so clear and bold to us that he is getting himself into trouble, he on the other hand is clueless. He has become so naive to his own thoughts and curiosity. Professor Baglioni tells him that his life is in danger. He still fails to come to the realization of Beatrice. Even after she killed the butterfly and the pure flowers that he threw to her. He is so absent minded that he believes that she is no mare than a sin free, sheltered young woman, trapped by her fathers commands. He goes as far as getting burned by her touch one day in the garden, and yet still thinks that everything is well. Not until Baglioni tells him of an old tale, does he finally come to his senses.
