             Emotions are directly linked to thought processes. Since emotions are a result of a value judgement about an object, it is important to consider the development of thought in the individual. This process of judgement involves sensation, memory and imagination while engaging the intellect so that the meaning of the situation may be grasped . The meaning attributed to a situation is built up over time through numerous similar experiences. In a similar way, the act of emotion involves almost all the powers of the person, which have been ordered as such through numerous situations. At the time of the emotional situation, all of these powers are working simultaneously according to the pattern of their past experience, while ordering this current experience into the total pattern of their personality . Thus, one emotional situation involves the whole person, while their response to this situation is strongly influenced by their history .
             Our emotional response to an object is formed as a result of learning. Through a series of encounters with an object or situation, the person acquires knowledge of whether this encounter is suitable or dangerous. The emotional response follows this perception naturally . This emotional habit forms gradually through repeated encounters, however, a traumatic experience may cause this learning to occur suddenly .
             A situation or object may become 'conditioned' according to a particular emotion. If a person encounters a stimulus that is unexpected and intense, this situation may bring about a feeling of fear. However, a neutral object that is paired with the 'fear stimulus', will be conditioned, in the person's thought process, to arouse fear .
