Beowulf

I feel that Beowulf conforms to the characteristics of the traditional epic very well. Throughout the story there are many characteristics of an epic that are present. In an epic the plot is complicated by supernatural beings or events and may involve a long and dangerous journey through foreign lands. This is shown by the flights between Beowulf and Grendel, and Beowulf and Grendel's mother. Grendel is a very large hairy monster and Beowulf has to go under water to fight Grendel's mother. Beowulf is originally from Sweden, but he ends up traveling to Denmark to save his cousin from Grendel. This is a major characteristic of an epic. It showns how the setting is vast in scope, often involving more than one nation.

One speech that takes place is when Beowulf is on the verge of dieing. Within an epic the hero, who is generally a male, is of noble birth or high position. During the battle between Beowulf and Grendel's mother, the warriors didn't have to much hope for Beowulf. "They (the warriors) spoke about Beowulf, all the graybeards, whispered together and said that hope was gone, that the hero had lost fame and his life at once, and would never return to the living . Many of them which make the reader want to keep reading more and more. Once Beowulf was done with his speech, Hrothgar gave a "re-buttle" so to say. The main reasons he gives as to why he should go through such a battle is because of fame, duty, and adventure. Then you have the battle between Beowulf and Grendel. " This shows how the actions of the hero often determine the fate of a nation or a group of people. He says why he feels Beowulf is the right man for the job. As in the poem itself "Screams of the Almighty's enemy sang in the darkness, the horrible shrieks of pain and defeat, the tears torn out of Grendel's taut throat, hell's captive caught in the arms of him who of all the men on earth was the strongest. This was just another example of a long, formal speech that one of the main characters gives.
