thin red line essay

Journal on "The thin red line" by James Jones
The time frame in November 1942 and is during World War 2. The era was at a time when America had just come into the war and was fighting Japan as they tried to mount an attack to gain superiority in the southern-west pacific. An American rifle company is sent to the fictional island.
The book takes place on a fictional island in the Guadalcanal. The island is full of vegetation and has a thick forest. The island is very humid and has a varying climate that is almost intolerable. The island itself is very dreary. It's not the sort of spot I would like to neither spend weekends at nor fight a war. The weather is humid and has continues rain coming down. It would be hard to keep your self optimistic and actually want to live when you have to put up with this island while fighting a deadly war. I would find myself in the dumps if I as put onto this island. The island is littered with previous battle and marks.

They start to understand that the island isn't a beautiful resort. They drive inwards towards there barracks they feel the weather and conditions are worsening. As the war rages on the conditions obviously become ridiculous. The book shows how war has lasting affects on anyone even if it is just the conditions they fight in. the soldiers become sick and tired almost to point of collapsing.
The setting affects the story in many ways. The way the battles are fought are sickening and over time, due to the island, almost time pointless. The foliage provides great cover for the Japanese who had already formed structured and connected pits and trenches. The Americans had to send infantry into the line of fire to gain ground. Of coarse this was costly
