ILLITERACY & ITS EFFECTS

             Education and literacy is an important part of building an economically and socially stable global environment. Event in the recent past further emphasize the absolute importance of universal basic education of good quality as an essential, if not sufficient, condition for a healthier, more democratic and more tolerant world. Illiteracy is the inability to read or write and the rate of illiteracy is growing at an alarming and that fact hasn't changed much in the year 2003. World education has become the business of everyone including governments, agencies and organizations, civil society, and donors. However the prime argument is that illiteracy is the root cause of many problems including poverty, ignorance and disorder.
             The scourge of illiteracy most affects the world's poor - those who can least afford yet another burden in life. UNESCO's statistical yearbook manifests that this occurs more often in developing and third world countries. Africa had 55 percent whereas India had over 70 percent of adult illiterates, and women are the most targeted gender compared to men (UNESCO, 1988). But what is more devastating to see is that newborns are still denied the right to read and write simply because of the fact that their parents or guardians cannot afford the fees. Poverty is often referred to, as an incurable disease but that is not true. When a destitute man wakes up in the morning the number one thing on his agenda is to get a proper meal for the day from piles of garbage. Second comes finding a better shelter if they slept on the streets, else go and beg. I don't think that he/she would even think about sending their children to a school because they were brought up the same way. They were never taught how to read or write so they follow a daily routine.
