The Effects on Civilization
Michael Adas points out in his book Machines as the Measure of Men, that eighteenth century French bourgeois definition of "civilized" grew to become the standard for Western culture. He argued this to be right due to European expansionist efforts growing further toward a globalize ideal. Society's attitudes toward time, work and nature had transformed due to the changing technology. Similarly, James Gleick focuses on our contemporary culture, in Faster, as being defined by particular experiences of time and work. The argument, that the Enlightenment thinkers predicted and or hoped for this type of society, and the argument that we are suffering with the consequences of "revenge effect" of the efforts initiated by the European authors of the philosophy of progress are two debates that could be easily argued. In my opinion I believe that we are suffering from the revenge effect. There is one thing about history that is always right, it will never change. Through textbooks, videos, magazines, etc., society has learned about our past cultures; the way they worked, slept, ate, and how they carried out day to day projects and controversies. This is an obvious case of individuals attaining to look busy, consciously or unconsciously, so they could look more important or professional. When one is in a rush, their mental state of mind changes from being a nice friendly person to an angry, frustrated person who will do anything to get from point A to point B. Today, there are more single male and female workers who wish to work the extra hour to save up for a sports car. " Most of them didn't have a wish list such as wanting to travel the world or buy a new car before they died. We seem to be adding more then we're accomplishing. As time passes our wish list gets larger. In this highly technological advanced world, one is able to drive a car, eat breakfast, listen to a book, and talk on the phone, all at once. We have to realize that we can't accomplish everything in life that we set out to do. According to an American Study, Americans believed that they would fall into financial freedom, which would decline their working hours and increase leisure time. Everyone possesses a wish list, a list of activitiesthat one wants to participate in or an unnecessary want one desires to acquire. Years ago, workers worked to support their families. I believe as new technology developed, enlightenment thinkers predicted that between our attitudes, work, beliefs, technology, etc. They didn't have the advances in technology such as medicine that we have today.
