Literature
American Literature is written by people who call themselves American and at the same time shape what it means to be American. American Literature separates itself from other forms of literature because of its individuality and most of what is written about in American literature are things that relate to society at the time it is written. Ben Franklin wrote about things that were important when he was alive such as: Slavery, Religion and other important issues that he felt strong about. What it means to be American, being American means that you have the right to voice your opinion about your government, religion and anything that you want to voice your opinion about. American freedom is the backbone of our country; we separated ourselves from England because of religious freedom. And to this day, our citizens and ultimately our country depends upon having that ability, the people in the United States define what it means to be American. I believe that people who we consider American authors are those that have made a statement to society by writing what they have written. These poets and authors have taken a stance against something in society that needed to be changed in some way. Like the issue of slavery, and women’s ri . . .
We would have never studied Edgar Allen Poe or Emily Dickinson in my history classes. He also helped establish the first library, and many other public buildings. The authors like Dickinson, and Poe have a very different effect on us when we read what they have written. Franklin believed that educating youth was important. And Franklin thought that dedicating your life and all your beliefs into one set of morals was not the right thing to do. I wonder as I am writing this weeks away from another election day, where the fate of the country lies in our hands. The other authors we have studied are very interesting; however, the most appealing to me was Ben Franklin. The most American author that we have read so far, in my opinion, is Ben Franklin. He seemed to have thought that morals, and cultural humanity where more important than faith. However, Ben Franklin was the most impressive to me because I learned about him in History classes, not in my English classes. What would Ben Franklin think of the way the government acts today? The war in Iraq? I honestly don’t know, I would assume that he would think that their was really no need for the fighting amongst us, especially since the war in Iraq is very much about religion, and who is right or wrong for their beliefs. The colonies, according to Franklin, should have a single leadership, not each colony having their own leadership. He truly set the foundation for the way modern America is. I think that he would be outraged at the amount of tax money that we are putting in to the war and the amount of our men and women that tragically don’t make it home to America.
