A comparrison of The Sower

The two paintings I chose to write about are Van Gogh's "The Sower” , which was painted in and Edvard Munch’s, "Death in the Sick Room," which was painted 1893. These two artists both painted during the Expressionism period in art. According to Encarta, online expressionism was a movement during the nineteenth century that strived to express subjective feelings and emotions rather than to depict reality or nature objectively (“para”1). The next paragraph will give a brief comparison of both artists and their impacts on the expressionism movement.

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter who changed the genre of Expressionism . He was born in Groot-Zundert, The Netherlands. He was an evangelist preacher for the miners at Wasmes in Belgium. Whereas Edvard Munch was born in Oslo, Norway in 1863. Munch painted and drew themes that were morbid and dark, just like some of his own life experiences. Van Gogh also painted about his own experiences but his paintings did not have the same morbid themes as Munch’s paintings. These two artists both learned to paint differently. Van Gogh taught himself whereas Munch studied art under Christian Krohg, a Norwegian naturalistic painter (web museum Paris“para 2). These two artists had some s

. . .
They both had different styles of painting.

The color schemes in both paintings were realistic. Munch based this theme on his personal experience of watching his sister die whereas Van Gogh was basing his on another artist’s theme in a painting. According to art archive “The sower was Van Gogh’s first endeavor to make an original contribution (“para” 1). Much like a hot political speech or a fiery church sermon, there is evidence of passion for much more than what is simply on the surface of each artist's works. What we see are not images that were intended for universal appeal, they are deeply personal works that demonstrate elements at the core of each man. What becomes clear, in looking deeply into not only the works themselves, but the mindset of each painter and the issues of import during the time in which they worked, is that van Gogh, Munch and artists like them could not contain their fears about the world and about their mortality in check and used their painting as a self-therapy. Whereas Munch ‘s was painted from memory of the room that his sick sister was dying it. Munch’s painting made me think about my grandmother who died in a hospital five years ago.

To the unaware and the obtuse, Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh simply made paintings. Van Gogh chooses to use bold colors whereas Munch chooses to use a pale green wall of a room.

I really enjoyed comparing these two artists. Another similarity is that both artists used symbolism. Van Gough’s painting was done to try to copy another artist while Munch’s painting was about a tragic event in his life. These two paintings in my opinion make you stop and think about your life .
