sugar baby

The theme that is most predominantly addressed in the Scottish story, "Sugar Baby," by Fiona Gibson, is love. Through the personalities of Joe, Helen, Jeannie and their relationships with each other, we are able to see how their love for each other is expressed and how love affects their values and decisions. Joe is the main character of the story, "Sugar Baby." His character is very strong willed and determined. Throughout the story Joe is constantly in conflict with himself. He is fighting between what he knows is right and love for his wife and child. Joe believes that certain things, such as sugar, are bad for his child. He desperately wants the baby to grow up healthy, intelligent, and happy, but he is very afraid to take risks. Joe seems like the kind of person who will do anything to avoid messing up. At the same time though he wants to make his family happy and take care of them, and sometimes these two things cla

When it comes down to it though, Helen is unable to stand up for those morals against her Jeannie. It is obvious that she is the head of the house and that she holds all of the power. You can see that Joe is happy that his baby is loved, and you can read the pride in his tone, but at the same time you can see that Joe is completely unsatisfied with the way they are raising their child. It also shows that she is the force that Joe is fighting against. He was surprised the kid wasn't thrashing about on the rug in a sugar-overloaded frenzy. One example is when Helen tells Joe that the baby had already had chocolate. When she is alone with Joe she agrees with his morals and principals. She is a very old fashioned person with her own ideas, and she refuses to change them for anybody. Although she is one of the more minor characters in this story, a lot can be learned about her just by looking at the relationship between Helen and Joe, and the way that the baby is treated. The theme of love is supported by each of the characters in this story. It is her love that holds the family together and her love that she is in constant conflict with.
