Datalink layer
2.0 PURPOSE & INTERACTION WITH ADJACENT LAYER 3 Networking, are becoming essential and common in computer communication in small business, big companies and even home network. Networking is two or more computers linked together using communication medium and run by hardware and software components. The data communication is broken down into several tasks, where one is built over the other. These tasks are handled by entity which interacts with adjacent entity, for example the lower entity support the upper entity. These entities are listed below:1. Application layer - generates data to be transmitted2. Presentation layer - accepts messages generated by the application layer.3. Session layer - to set up dialogue between 1 applications4. Transport layer - ensures all messages are delivered correctly
It also in charge for several functions such as filtering, flooding, and sending frames. But what make a bridge different to repeater is that it functions as filter. Computers can transmited data anytime because transmission are random and the are no rules. In the Data link layer it only concern with physical address or MAC addresses that both contain the source and destination addresses. There are several types of error sources such as white noise, impulse noise, crosstalk, echo, jitter, attenuation, and distortion. Each computer is arrange in phyiscal or logical ring. This is an advantage because it can extend the distance of a LAN network through building each segment to its maximum distance (Forouzan: 264). If error is found then the source of the error is locate, and error is either reduce or eliminate it. * Loop avoidance - To avoid multiple connections between switches a Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP) is used to stop network loops and allow redundance.
