Essay
In comparing the two texts Emma and Clueless, it is apparent that the contexts have caused important changes, transformations, between the two texts. Both texts are based along the story-line of a young woman, with fanciful notions, who is rich, beautiful and essentially good-natured, but immature, selfish and narrow-minded, developing from this state through her re-education and develops into a socially responsible person and finally finds love as a result. On the one hand, Austen intended Emma as a didactic novel while Heckerling made Clueless as a pop-culture, teen-comedy flim. Emma is an essentially serious book, with grave social concerns and aims to educate the upper-classes, for whom the it was written, of the importance of a good, clear perception and rational thinking for the continuance of the social hierarchy of that time; in contrast, Clueless intends to be funny and entertaining to the consumerist, post-modern audience that it gently mocks. This change in context and aims resulted in changes in the texts, such as setting, the media used and the stylistic features that are used in such media.Setting is one textual aspect which has been changed between the two texts due to the changing co
For instance, when Emma first learns of Harriet's interest in Mr. On the other hand, Clueless is produces as a light-hearted comedy film for a late 20th century context. As Clueless is a film, camera shots are an important technique to be noted. By extension, the context caused a change in the stylistic techniques of both texts because each used different media. Motifs that occur in the film are cars, mobile phones, plastic surgery and clothing. Again, it is clear this is another transformation caused by the change in context. Therefore, the change in context is clearly has brought a transformation between the two text. On the one hand, Austen wrote Emma to be read widely amongst the literate, upper-class, to teach them the importance of a good perception and rational thinking, and so wrote in the form of a didactic novel. Costume in this film is a way of marking social status, and it is something a teenage audience (for whom this film is made) can relate to easily and understand. Again, this shows that the cultural context is shaping the text and has caused a transformation between the two texts. ' Here, Emma's appraisal of the situation, that Harriet would be worse-off marrying Mr. Costume is another important technique which has been introduced in Clueless, an important change in techniques used between the two texts, since it is unique to visual media. For example, Josh, who is socially concerned person, wears Amnesty International and Breast Cancer shirts, while Cher, who has a ridiculous amount of clothing, wears clothing that she thinks are her 'cutest little outfits'.
