Slaughter House -Five
In Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughter House-Five he tells a twisted tale of the life of a young boy, "who has become "unstuck in time"" (Houston, par 3). The novel does not have smooth transitions from one event to the next, such as visiting with aliens, then to married life, than to war all in one page. Because of that the book is somewhat confusing; this is just like modern man's life, confusing. This book undermines the reader's expectations. Vonnegut wrote this novel in such a way so it would break all the rules of the conventional novel. The conventional novel has smooth transitions; so to break the rules, Vonnegut wrote this book without any smooth transition. This book also reflects the life that modern men live. Life is not smooth; it is usually more of a bumpy ride. This novel is very complicated. Modern life is complicated and full of confusing issues. On a side note "the bombing of Dresden killed about 135,000 people which is more than the number of deaths in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined" (Boomhower, par 1)). As this book is read some different things to look at is the term "so it goes", Billy being weak or strong, importance of sight, illusion of freewill, Billy and aliens, and innocen
These experiences showed through Vonnegut's novel. He refuses to glorify war by creating a glamorous hero; instead, he gives us Billy. Only on Earth is there any talk of free will" (Vonnegut, 86). &page=1>"I really wonder what gives us the right to wreck this poor planet of ours"Vonnegut, Kurt. This novel was also dedicated to him (Vonnegut, 1). There were three traumatic experiences he talked about in this novel that happened to him as he was growing up. ' I've visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Those were sticks of high-explosive bombs. His emphasis on the idea of "studying" humans and inhabitants of other planets makes humans (and their conception of free will) and other non-Tralfamadorians seem like the bizarre exceptions to the rule of nature. The POWs work in a factory surrounded by the sweet vitamin-enriched syrup, and to get a taste of it they have to steal small spoonfuls of it. That was the author of this book".
