Essay on the Power of Advertising

             Advertising is everywhere. From the street corner to the local football game, and even to the internet, we cannot escape advertisements. Advertising attempts to get us to buy anything such things as Barbie, Victoria Secrets, Abercrombie, and diamonds. It persuades us that we need to vote for someone or that we need to wear something to be "cool." Advertising tries to sell us stuff we don't want, but the guy on the television claims, "Every house should have one."
             Advertising comes in all sorts of colors and expresses many things. Victoria Secret runs their whole advertising scheme on the idea that sex sells. They have a beautiful, half-naked woman wearing their line of undergarments, saying something to the effect of "even angels need a lift" (in regards to their new range of bras called Angel Lifts). Barbie goes along with the idea that she is fun to play with. Mattel uses bright, colorful, eye-appealing clothes and boxes to attract the consumer's attention. They also play on the fact that Barbie is the greatest, and that she can be anything. From a doctor to a family person, to a swan princess, Barbie has got it all.
             Advertising can be anywhere, at any time, at any place. It's all over the internet, along with the sides of the highways, and even on the simplest things as a pen. Advertising on the web can be compared to an annoying four-year-old that just won't leave you alone. You think you got rid of it, when in all actuality, with the next click of the button, it comes right back. Daily, when I check my email, I have more than five spam emails. Most of which are highly inappropriate for young children.
             Advertising has gotten out of control. It is caused by people trying to sell their product or promote something. It is influenced by popular culture, and it strongly displays sexual notions. It can be grouped by the type of media it is presented on billboard, magazine, newspaper, pens and pencils, internet, free stuff,...
