Childish Wisdom
It is amazing how much one can learn from children. Bustling with mind-blowing energy, they seem to forge their way into the wild uncharted territories of life in a way that would make the most courageous of explorers proud. . It is for that reason I often look back to my childhood days when faced with times that are hard to overcome… As a little girl I loved to dance. As soon as music was playing, I could be found twirling around the living room as soon as I was able to stand on my own two feet. That natural eagerness to dance stayed with me through out the years bestowing me with many wonderful experiences / That eagerness to dance was at it’s peek when the ballet group I took part in was invited by my primary school to perform for students and parents. Henceforth, all my energy was channelled into perfecting the intricate patterns of twists, bends and turns that formed our prize . . .
The sight of hundred of people slowly blurred and was replaced by the vision of my moves being executed: … arabesque , twist and hop, plié and hop… In my semi-dazed state I failed to notice the re-occurring chuckles coming from the crowd. Thus, inspired by my that comforting thought and armed with my childhood experience, I continue making my way through life,. That night- although not turning out like planned - will stay etched in my mind for decades to come. As the first notes of the enchanting yet energetic melody filled my ears, I forgot about everything that surrounded me. I felt I had only one option: stay and finish what I started the best way I could. It was only as I was leaning forward for a Grand- écart that I looked down and gasp- saw my pretty skirt where it definitely was not suppose to be: bunched up around my knees! Still in a daze I gazed at the mischievous item of clothing thinking: “ This is not suppose to be happening!” Meanwhile, the amphitheatre was alive with uncontrollable fits of giggles and laughter . ” In the long run, emotions will gradually wash away like footprints by water, but the path one has taken will never be erased. As much as I wanted the show to end, I knew it wouldn’t and thus had only one option. Not nearly as nervous as should be, I paced around the small area back stage, adjusting my new beautiful ballet skirt and waiting for our turn. Gleefully skipping on stage and casually waving to a few friends in the audience, I angled my hands and modestly bowed my head forming thus the starting position. Pulling up my skirt, ( which ,might I add, had a missing button and would not stay up) I mustered whatever dignity I could, looked at my fellow dancers to find my way in the choreography and as gracefully as possible ( while holding up the skirt with whichever hand was available) I danced along as if oblivious to the smiles blatantly apparent on the spectators. What I value the most from that experience is the knowledge that I could of bolted off the stage , but chose not to. The day of my performance I was alive with excitement.
