Courage

What is courage? Courage is mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty (www.webster.com). There are many several different types and several different ways to express courage, but in the award-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, courage is shown through moral and physical manifestations. Moral courage is something that happens within us, when one takes the initiative to try to succeed when no one else will. Physical courage is an action that one can see and experience for themselves inside and out. In someone’s lifetime at one point or another some type of courage will affect him or her in some way. It may be a positive or negative experience. One example is when Atticus shows moral courage when he agrees to defend Tom Robinson in his court trial. Another is when Atticus shoots the mad dog down the street in front of Jem and Scout. Lastly, an example of physical courage is when Boo Radley protects Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell after the Halloween pageant.

The first example of moral courage is when Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson in his court trial. Many of the people in Maycomb, Alabama are racist or prejudice and think it’s a sin t

. . .

He didn’t want to kill the dog in front of them, but he was forced to. So Atticus showed physical courage in doing the right thing for Tim Johnson, his family and neighbors. The dog was in much pain and would have suffered a painful death, and if he didn’t everyone in the neighborhood would have been in extreme danger. Dubose’s eyes, she sees Atticus as a “nigger-lover” (page 112). He knows what is right, and even though many others have different beliefs on what he was doing, that still did not stop him from what he had committed to do. It all starts when a mysterious person attacks Jem and Scout late at night on their way home from a Halloween pageant. He was not selfish either, and did not think of himself; only what kind of danger Jem and Scout were in. It begins when Jem and Scout get air rifles for Christmas, Atticus refuses to teach them how to shoot. Atticus tried to succeed in proving Tom Robinson not guilty, but the jury concluded that he was guilty of raping and beating Mayella Ewell.

Lastly, an example of physical courage is when Boo Radley protects Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell. Luckily, the incident happened near by the Radley house, and Boo Radley protected and saved Jem and Scout. Atticus says,” I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when your licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it though no matter what” (page 116). When Atticus does shoot Tim Johnson, in the presence of Jem and Scout they are stunned by their father’s accuracy. He didn’t want to set a bad example for them, because he feels that shooting nature, and things that God created is a sin.
