William Blake bio

William Blake was a poet and visual artist who embodied all that is the spiritual nature of man, in his pure, untainted art form. A master of not only the English language, but also the language of the gods, Blake was ostracized, as the general public had trouble with his linear, gothic, and often edgy style of both writing and painting. Born near Golden Square in London on November 28, 1757, William Blake was a precocious youth. Blake's parents were very religious and were quite devoted to the obscure Swedenborgian sect of Christianity, under the principals of which William was raised. Not only was William a bright child and was born in a holy time for the Swedenborgians, but he began to have "spiritual" visions at a young age, including "God on the rooftops of London" and "angels in the trees." William's parents were very pleased with him and they bore another child when William was 3 years old, who they named Robert. Much like his brother, Robert had visions, often the same or simila

Blake continued writing and chose to write more and more of his view of the world and the universe and concluded his life as he was illustrating Dante's Inferno on August 12, 1827, stating that, "I am finally going to the country that I wish to see. As a result, all of Blake's work (which was to be printed) had to first be written backwards. The girl's name was Catherine Sophia Boucher and although she could speak no English, the two fell madly in love and were soon married. Soon after this discovery, Robert again "gave" William advice, which was to print his early poems, calling them The Songs of Innocence. " Sure enough, only a few years later, Blake received word that in fact Ryland had been hanged for forgery. When William awoke, he found himself much closer to the spiritual world and soon was "given" by Robert (from beyond the grave) plans for a new process of printing, called "illuminated printing" which utilized copper plates and acid. At 20 William fell in love with a woman named Katherine who unfortunately turned out to be unfaithful and the relationship fizzled. When Robert died, William claimed to have seen his soul "ascending through the matter of fact ceiling, clapping his hands with joy," after which William collapsed into a three-day coma. Five years later, Blake published an accompanying set, called The Songs of Maturity. At 16 Blake left Basire's shop and sought his own fortune as an engraver, artist and poet. Even without the aid of a formal education, William grew to become a thriving intellectual: "Thank God I was never sent to school, to be flogged into following the style of a fool. This newfound extremism nearly cost Blake his life, as many wanted him hanged. The three worked well for three years, until Robert too passed on, leaving William devastated. The pair moved to a beautiful cottage and William taught Catherine everything about engraving and printing and the two became not only lovers, but work partners as well.
